A poultry farm is an establishment where poultry are raised, mainly laying hens and broilers. In a poultry farm, chickens are raised in large numbers, especially in those establishments dedicated to the breeding of broilers and laying hens. The operation of a poultry farm depends many times on the volume of production; however, there are certain patterns that are present in all sizes.

Operation of a poultry farm

The poultry industry is characterized by producing a cheap product, which grows rapidly and does not require as much care. For example, at the beginning of the productive cycle of the broiler, the aviculturist buys chicks for his poultry farm and fattens them for seven to nine weeks. Once the chickens reach the appropriate weight they are sold and distributed to poultry shops, supermarkets and other establishments.

In the case of egg production, the production process begins when the aviculturist buys laying hens that specialize in producing eggs and fattens them until they enter their productive life, which can last up to fourteen months.

Each laying hen produces around 26 eggs per month; and do not lay eggs every day. It is important to clarify that these hens meet roosters and are not fertilized, that is, they never give chicks and are suitable for human consumption.

Like any other type of industry, the objective of the aviculturist is to obtain good income from his exploitation, of either broiler chickens or laying hens. That is why it is important that the business of the poultry farm be profitable and manage to pay for the expenses, amortize the investments and obtain a profit.

The profitability of a poultry farm is usually determined by external factors that cannot be controlled directly, such as the rise in the price of inputs or the fall in the selling price of poultry products. However, through good management, the aviculturist can reduce the risks presented by these factors and thus the exploitation is safer and more profitable.

Poultry farming and its production process

Poultry farming is a technique that is dedicated to the breeding of birds and is oriented to the production of meat and egg production.

Poultry farming includes different techniques and procedures that allow the raising of birds with an exclusively commercial purpose. It is an activity whose main objective is to produce meat and obtain eggs from chickens, and precisely in this article, we are going to focus on the egg production process.

Development of poultry

During the process of raising the laying hens, feeding is essential. The foods must be natural and processed, rich in proteins, calcium, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. The quality of their food also determines the quality of the product, that is why it is important to provide them with a complete and balanced diet.

The second step of the production process has to do with the collection of the product. After the hens have gone through the process of fertilization, the egg is formed and must be collected manually.

After the harvest, the eggs go through a classification procedure in order to guarantee the quality of the product and satisfy the final consumer. During a stage the appearance of the egg is checked, if it is fractured or damaged; if the egg does not meet the appropriate conditions, it is discarded.

Another task to ensure that the product is free of dirt and contaminants is cleaning. The objective of this part of the production process is to guarantee quality and safe products, that is, they do not cause any harm to the health of the consumer.

The last step of the production process after cleaning the product refers to the packaging of the eggs in containers. Generally, poultry boxes are used with a capacity of up to thirty eggs; in turn, these same boxes are placed carefully in boxes with a capacity for three hundred and sixty eggs.
