Good Agricultural Practices for Pre-Harvest and Post-Harvest Management in Agricultural Products – Cereals, Oilseeds, Fruits, and Vegetables.

One of the most important elements in agricultural production, whether of cereals, oilseeds, or fruits and vegetables, refers to pre-harvest practices, activities, and post-harvest practices, and actions. Many of the agricultural products produced fail to obtain adequate yields in their crops due to inefficient practices of crop maintenance and other pre-harvest work. This includes a diversity of practices and activities according to each agricultural product, but usually includes activities such as seed preparation, inoculation, land preparation process, transplantation of nurseries, cultural work, weed control, pest control, fertilization, implementation of irrigation systems, and crop maintenance tasks, among others.

When some of these tasks are not well developed or is carried out inefficiently, the crop reduces its yield and, therefore, decreases the profitability of the project.

The same happens in what is called post-harvest treatment. When the product is harvested, millions of tons of products are lost due to poor post-harvest management. These post-harvest practices usually involve various stages, including harvesting, harvesting tools, field conditioning, packing transportation, conditioning operations (washing, sanitizing, waxing, sorting), packing practices, types of packaging used, treatment against insects and fungi, cooling, storage, transport and logistics to distribution channels, and operations of loading, unloading, transshipment and storage at the final destination, among other aspects.

Aware that Good Practices in Pre-Harvest Management and Good Practices in Post-Harvest management are fundamental to maintaining an acceptable, safe and profitable operation for the producer and packaging (in the case of fruit and vegetables).
